Per , United are keen on bringing Gomes back to Old Trafford, having sold him to Lille in 2020. The club's recruitment staff are said to believe that the playmaker can become integral to new manager Ruben Amorim, who is a long-term admirer of the 24-year-old, although they may face competition from Tottenham.

Gomes' contract expires at the end of the season, meaning that he can discuss pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January, and United believe they can lure him back with the promise of becoming Casemiro's long-term replacement in midfield. That he would cost nothing is, of course, likely to be a motivating factor, and Gomes has previously admitted he would find it "difficult" to say no to a return.
